Chapter 15

Stands Tall sat in his massive chair in front of the fireplace. He was sick of the rain. His joints ached in this kind of weather and made him feel his years. Several of his sons and their friends sat to one side of the room playing a game of dice. Occasionally shouts and laughter would interrupt his melancholy mood.

He knew it was time for him to visit his youngest wife at the small house reserved for that purpose. But Stands Tall was having a bad day. He was becoming an old man and was slowing down more than he liked. Rainy days like this one, made it all the worse. He had been head of the Chippewa Council for years now, but no longer found satisfaction in overseeing the Chippewa nation.

He remembered the days of youth as if they were yesterday. He and his father Kills Many had traveled far and fought battles against all enemies. How he missed his father and the excitement of those days. He could not reminisce these days without thinking of the Colter family as well. Especially the time he spent with them and their wonderful dogs.

He especially missed them now and he wasn’t sure why. They’d been solid allies, as loyal in battle as any. He remembered when he was a boy named Little Stone. He’d traveled to Ohio with his father and Grey Wolf, to find the white people living there. He’d hurt his foot and the white people’s medicine had saved his life.

The second time the Colters saved him was when he’d been held captive by the Sioux and faced a cruel death by torture. Now all he could do was sit and reminisce about those days. He hated getting old. He hated the rain too.

It quit raining the following week. Everywhere in the Chippewa settlement there were streets of mud. It was early spring so everyone looked forward to the warmth of the sun. But they also knew that was weeks away.

When the runner from the west arrived, everyone in the Chippewa village knew it must be important news indeed. Immediately people began to speculate on what news he carried. Was it good? Was it bad? No one knew for sure as the runner was escorted to the small house where Stands Tall was visiting his youngest wife.

When the runner was announced, Stands Tall had him wait on the porch until he and his wife were decent. The runner was summoned and entered the dimly lit room. He waited for Stands Tall to address him.

“What brings you to my house on this day?” Stands Tall asked.

“I bring news,” the runner said. “The Sioux are sending warriors for some reason to their Iowa Little Raccoon River site. We think the Sioux plan a move on their enemies.”

“How many are there?” Stands Tall asked.

“Not many now,” the runner said. “Many more may come.”

“How many more do you think?” Stands Tall asked.

“Not more than a hundred,” the runner said.

“That is curious,” Stands Tall said.
